Fair Isaac Corp (NYSE:FICO) is a data analytics company best known for creating the FICO score. Lenders use this score to measure a consumer's credit risk. For many years, FICO has been the primary score used in the U.S. mortgage market, but it faces growing competition from its rival, VantageScore.
On September 29, 2026, the analyst firm RBC Capital reiterated its "Outperform" rating for FICO. This rating suggests the firm believes the stock will perform better than the overall market. At the time of the rating update, the stock price was $616.72, following a significant single-day drop.
This price decline was triggered by an announcement from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). The agency stated that new mortgage pricing changes would allow VantageScore to compete directly with FICO. As a result, FICO shares fell 26.66%, or $224.17, to close at $616.72.
The FHFA's new policy creates a single pricing grid for government-backed mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. This means lenders can now use the less expensive VantageScore, which costs around $0.99, instead of FICO's score, which costs about $10.00. This change ends FICO's long-held advantage in the mortgage market.
The market reacted strongly to the news, with FICO experiencing its worst single-day decline in over two years, as highlighted by Schaeffersresearch.com. The stock hit a new 52-week low of $595.19 during the trading day, with a session volume of 4.76 million shares.
