Merchandise, intermodal and coal revenue, along with fuel surcharges, could support results. Intermodal shipping uses more than one type of transport, such as trains and trucks. Higher labor costs and rail network disruptions could offset some of those gains.

As highlighted by Zacks Investment Research, CSX beats consensus earnings estimates in three of the past four quarters, by an average of 3.97%. Still, Zacks says its indicators do not point to a likely beat this quarter. Its consensus earnings estimate is down 1.85% over the past 60 days.
